Full Yard with Rock Work Near the University of Calgary

The Challenge

For this new home in an established area, the homeowners wanted a natural front yard with no lawn and a mix of mostly native evergreen and deciduous shrubs and groundcover flowers that will bloom throughout the growing season. Dogwood, birches, evergreens and grasses bring colour in winter too.

The Solution

On both sides of the yard, we built rock river swales with flagstone waterfalls to take water from the roof and distribute it throughout the yard. Cedar 4 x 4’s act as edging against the neighbour’s lawn.

Since we installed this yard, the clients have signed up every year for the Eco-yards Spray (Compost tea) service to keep their yard healthy and lush.

Eco-yards designed and installed our extensive greenery in our front yard. The mix of flowering perennials, low profile evergreens, flowering shrubs, decorative rock work, etc. has provided wonderful colours for an extended portion of the summer which our neighbours say they appreciate. We have asked Eco-yards crews to help with major pruning of shrubs and evergreens and they have always done an excellent job. We have indeed learned a great deal from them working side by side on pruning and weeding. I would not hesitate to use Eco-yards again or to recommend them to neighbours and friends. No question our extensive landscaping was not inexpensive but it has been a wonderful complement to our home.
